Electric Vehicle Charging
We are seeking your support to install a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station at St. Faith’s as a part of our climate commitment and to provide a public benefit in our community. As we witness the increasing impacts of climate change caused by human-made carbon emissions in our region and our world, we want to be a part of the solution and help people to make climate-friendly changes in their lives.
We have selected an EV charging station as a way to do this work because it will fill a need in our surrounding community–there is little-to-no public charging available south of 41st Ave and through Marpole. What’s more, our street is a small business destination for people coming to the coffee shop, grocery store, restaurant, and other businesses, (not to mention people coming to the church for recitals, music lessons, meetings, and worship) and as we look around, we see lots of electric vehicles parked on the street and in our parking lot. We think that there is a demand for charging infrastructure, and we think that with increasing densification in our neighbourhood, that demand will only grow.
This EV charging station will help fill a gap in public charging infrastructure in our corner of Vancouver and to do our part to facilitate a change away from gas-powered transportation to cleaner technologies. It is one of the many ways that we can be a force for change in our community and world.
The Details
If you are curious about the specifics…
- A Canadian Company: We’ve selected to work with Flo, a Canadian owned charging network using Canadian made hardware. In addition to wanting to work with a Canadian company, Flo has the largest charging network in Canada, so most EV drivers will have an account with Flo already.
- Designed for the Future: We are installing a Level 2 charger (a Core+ Max station) that can provide a charging capacity of up to 19.2kW, which is significantly more than the older 6.2kW Level 2 chargers that are more common. While this is more than many vehicles can fully use from a Level 2 station, newer vehicles are starting to support it and more will in the future.
- Paying for Itself: We will be able to set the price for charging at our station and have full control over when it can be used, meaning that it will cover its own costs for operation, and even produce a modest source of revenue for the church.
