We were in a celebratory mood as we reflected on a number of initiatives underway at St. Faith’s The growth of the Thanksgiving dinner in numbers of people attending (120+ estimate) filled all the set tables with some people eating upstairs in the Narthex. There was a great sense of warmth, community connectedness and volunteerism, with just the right amount of turkeys and desserts. More gravy next year!
Other items to celebrate include the launch in October of a small group ministry led by Sunny and Rey. It meets on Thursdays at 7:30 pm and is called “Fellowship, Bible and Life Sharing”. Our teen group has restarted meeting and was augmented with three new grade 6 and 7 youths. They were proud to have contributed to the Thanksgiving dinner by baking pies. And the first ever Fall Work Bee in late September was a success, highlighted by three pick up loads of new chips raked into the playground.
St. Hildegard’s Sanctuary has been active with Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Sunday, hosting a book launch for poet Susan McCaslin and installation of a new art exhibit called “Memories of Richmond” by Horae Jiang. Next up is the book launch by Kate Braid on Oct 24 and then the Illuminate Gala on Nov. 14th. Art type donations (art, art supplies, theatre tickets etc.) are most welcome for the silent auction fundraiser.
Seminarian Intern, Chris Clark submitted a report outlining his ongoing pursuit of two Masters degrees and his Theological Field Education goals at St. Faiths – Worship & Liturgy, Pastoral Care, and Functions of a Rector. He concluded by saying his experience so far is that “St. Faith’s is a safe and supportive place to learn.”
The Treasurer highlighted that revenues are 5% above budget as higher than expected rental revenues offset below budget donations. Operating expenses are on budget. Our invested funds at RBC PHN continue to do well. A major work project for Sherman currently underway is moving our bank accounts to VanCity, which will result in more flexible banking processes (on-line payments) and enhanced service. Good by signing and mailing cheques.
We are in the midst of the 2026 Stewardship Pledge campaign “Chorus of Generosity”. An upgraded communication package and pledge card was distributed including the “30 day challenge” – ideas on how to be generous.`Council is thankful for the roster of volunteer speakers – Heather H., Lorin G, Dean P (poem), Laurel P and Lyn J. The final celebratory Sunday is next with a special coffee hour highlighted by a David S carrot cake.
The property report highlighted the many tasks completed by the 13 volunteers during the Fall work bee. Mike and Pam S were also busy in the playground replacing rotting logs and stabilizing fence posts. Council approved the contract with Mowology for the upcoming winter salting and snow removal for our sidewalks and parking lot.
Outreach season is well underway led by Kathy Robb. For the Christmas bake sale, volunteers have already produced over 270 jars of jams and pickles, plus mincemeat and Xmas cakes. Many parishioners are signed up for the upcoming Halloween event, which supports Directions Youth. The Purdy’s Xmas chocolates catalogue is now available at the church with order pick ups potentially on Nov. 30th. Bev H. has stepped in to spearhead the popular Mission to Seafarers on Dec. 7th.
An interesting discussion by Adam, Melanie and the Council revolved around the challenge and opportunity of a vibrant and growing church like St. Faith’s. Specifically new programs cannot be universal and cannot all be supported by the rectors. So new programs will likely be led by interested/qualified parishioners – called Small Group Ministry.
Last week a small funeral was held for Hermina Louwersheimer, which highlighted her Dutch heritage, meaningful life and care of foster children. This Friday, October 24th, a funeral for long time parishioner Sylvia Bildfell is being held at 2:00 pm. All are welcome to attend.
Sincerely,
John Wheeler
